CAGJ is proud to have been approved as a new member of the Domestic Fair Trade Association in early January! The mission of the DFTA is to “Promote and protect the integrity of domestic fair trade principles and practices through education, marketing, advocacy and endorsement”. Read the DFTA’s principles here. One of the DFTA’s important contributions to the food sovereignty movement is “Fair Facts“, an in-depth evaluation and comparison of Fair Trade and other social justice certification programs.
Earlier this month Heather Day and Chris Iberle participated in the DFTA’s annual meeting hosted by Community to Community in Bellingham. The meeting was a great opportunity to connect with and learn from farmworkers, (including Familias Unidas por la Justicia), farmers (including Ben Burkett of Federation of Southern Cooperatives and NFFC), Co-op workers from around the country, progressive Fair Trade businesses such as Dr. Bronners, and other non-profit allies including Got Green? and UFCW Local 21. We also had the privilege of hearing an incredible keynote by Valerie Segrest, of Muckleshoot Food Sovereignty Project.
As a member of the DFTA we are excited to support growing advocacy efforts, and continue to promote DFTA’s Fair Facts program.
