In 2006, the Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation launched the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). AGRA’s primary goal is to alleviate poverty and reduce hunger in Africa through agricultural development that targets small-scale farmers. Unfortunately, the Foundation promotes industrial farming, inappropriate technologies, and pro-corporate policies that will make things worse for the hungry, for small farmers, consumer health, and the environment in Africa.

The Gates Foundation and AGRA claim to be “pro-poor” and “pro-environment,” but their approach is closely aligned with transnational corporations, such as Monsanto, and foreign policy actors like USAID. They take advantage of food and global climate crises to promote high-tech, market-based, industrial agriculture and generate profits for corporations even while degrading the environment and dis-empowering farmers.

Feeding the world and preserving the environment requires moving away from industrial agriculture and techno-fixes (like genetic engineering), and towards proven small-scale agroecological farming. A growing international movement of peasant farmers, fisherfolk, rural women, landless workers and indigenous peoples are calling for food sovereignty—the right to define their food and agriculture systems—as a solution to hunger, poverty and the climate crisis.

Sign the petition TODAY to pressure the Gates Foundation to support African-initiated programs rooted in indigenous farming practices, social equity and food sovereignty.

  1. The “Green Revolution” failed in the 1970s for many inappropriate technologies that the Gates Foundation is foisting on the African continent. But also it is contaminating African food stock with genetically modified organism (GMO) and less diverse seed and is implementing the corporatization of farming.

Let us not forget those lessons, America! Do not be lulled by the false promise of misplaced technology that wrecked farmer based economies worldwide. And do not believe that these are the means to free peoples from hunger. No, it is only the means to impose corporate slavery and misery!

  2. We couldn’t agree more, Cynthia!

Make sure you become a member of CAGJ to join the campaign to change the Gates Foundation’s support of AGRA.
