CAGJ’s AGRA Watch project is excited to be working with IDEX to bring Lawrence Mkhaliphi to the Northwest! Mkhaliphi works with our 2013 Conference Partner, the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa, and is a tremendous community trainer, agroecologist, farmer, researcher and leader in South Africa in the Food and Climate Justice movements. He has been with Biowatch since 1999, and is co-author of their June 2012 Policy Report: Securing Farmers’ Rights and Seed Sovereignty in South Africa (download from Biowatch).
Prior to 1999, he was at the University of Zululand as outreach facilitator for Centre for Low Input Agricultural Research and Development for 9 years. He has a diploma in Agriculture, has much experience in low input agriculture and sustainable agriculture in Africa and India. He has been an inspiration to many rural homesteads. His work in cross border alliances with Brazil, India and South Africa in promoting sovereignty over food systems has won him great recognition and many awards. Since becoming part of the Biowatch team, Lawrence has been best known for his participatory and interactive workshops with rural women farmers in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.
His work with Biowatch has led to his participation in farmers’ exchanges as part of the African Biodiversity Network (ABN) in Kenya. Through ABN, Biowatch is connected to the recent Alliance For Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), launched on December 4, 2011. Biowatch has been a partner to International Development Exchange (IDEX) since 2010. IDEX facilitated Lawrence’s participation in the US Social Forum, in Detroit, MN and World Social Forum, in Dakar, Senegal, where he shared how small farmer-led sustainable farming model is a successful approach to fighting food insecurity.

-the best way to get here bc people often get lost coming to our house: go east on madison st until you get to 29th, take a right (at Cafe Flora) and after a short block (at Arthur St) take a soft right onto the middle street, continuing on 29th.
-the house is at the end of the block on the right. Large cream colored with red trim, big yard and garden, chain-link fence.
-buses 8 and 11 come within blocks; 43 and 48 stop at 23rd and john, about a 10 block walk down steep hills
