Farmers Markets Create Community Connections
by Nicole Kidder
Throughout much of the world, village markets not only play a crucial role in economic development, but they are also the social center of daily life. Although they do not play as important of a role in much of the developed world, farmers markets do provide a sense of connection to the communities that we live in.
Step inside the plaza of a local farmers market and you will find a wealth of information, from cooking demonstrations by master chefs to gardening advice to samples of rich seasonal foods. These family-friendly neighborhood markets offer live music, children’s activities and a variety of crafts from vendors representing their local and ethnic cultures. Most importantly, farmers markets link rural and urban populations, creating a direct relationship with the state’s agricultural system.
