Rise Up! is a 3-month political education and leadership development program offered by Community Alliance for Global Justice, where we create space to collectively develop tools and analysis to strengthen the global food sovereignty movement.
CAGJ hosts Rise Up! as part of our commitment to community education. Rise Up! contributes to shifting the dominant narratives around food systems, and developing knowledge and skills to engage with food sovereignty movements locally and abroad.

Throughout the three months it runs, Rise Up!:
- Introduces theoretical and practical components of food sovereignty;
- provides a broad overview of current food system issues;
- showcases how different movement actors organize against the injustices of our industrialized food system.
Rise Up! is typically structured into three month-long modules, each of which covers a different element of the food system or facet of food sovereignty. The specific content of the modules shifts to reflect CAGJ’s solidarity partner’s organizing.
Each month, participants delve into a curated set of readings, videos and podcasts that corresponds to the monthly theme. A webinar discussion and Q&A with movement leaders allows participants to deepen their understanding, and see how the things they’re learning translate into movement organizing. CAGJ staff and volunteer organizers lead a facilitated discussion session, where participants are encouraged to reflect on their understanding of the content and consider how they might contribute to food sovereignty movements.
In addition to a curated selection of reading materials and videos, and a chance to connect with movement leaders, CAGJ also provides participants with monthly action items – ways they can actively contribute to strengthening the very movements they’re learning about.
