Join us for a taste of exploitation-free berries and other goodies as we visit Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad (Earth and Freedom Cooperative farm)! This farm co-op is a perfect example of the realities we can create when we dream together. Founded by four farmworkers from Familias Unidas por la Justicia, the first farmworker union with a legally recognized right to collective bargaining, the co-op provides a space to build community, learn how to practice agroecology, and feed people good food.
While Familias Unidas por la Justicia farmworker union came together to fight for better working conditions in the berry fields of Washington, where exploitation of workers is often common-place, the co-op is something different. It provides members and consumers with a model for an alternative economy based on self-determination, that meets workers and community needs from its inception, not just as a compromise to maintain a workforce. As cooperative co-founder Tomas Ramon says, “This is for a better life.”
