CAGJ NEWS & ANALYSIS

DOL must fix farm workers’ prevailing wage surveys
June 3, 2024 - The Stand
On May 24, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on behalf of the Washington farmworkers’ union Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ) and its member Ramon Torres Hernandez that the Department of Labor (DOL) has a legal duty to protect domestic farmworkers’ wages in Washington state and require agricultural employers to offer the highest wage in contracts related to the H-2A program. Takeaways from Mexico’s final rebuttal on the USMCA GM corn case
June 20, 2024 - Tim Wise, IATP
Mexico’s closing argument in its ongoing dispute with the United States over its restrictions on genetically modified (GM) corn and glyphosate residues in tortillas was published in translation June 19. The government argues persuasively in the 264-page document that it has the right to take such precautionary measures under the trade agreement, that the measures have had minimal impacts on U.S. corn exporters and that its restrictions are indeed based on peer-reviewed science documenting the risks of consuming GM corn with glyphosate residues. These risks are particularly elevated for Mexicans, who consume more than 10 times the corn consumed in the U.S. and do so in minimally processed preparations, such as tortillas. Read more.

Three Ideas to Beat the Heat, and the People Who Made Them Happen
June 25, 2024 - Somini Sengupta, New York Times
As dangerous heat becomes impossible to ignore, an array of practical innovations are emerging around the world to protect people most vulnerable to its hazards. What’s notable is that these efforts don’t require untested technologies. Instead, they’re based on ideas that are practical and already known to work. Farmworker union Familias Unidas por la Justicia is recognized in this article! Great to see their efforts to protect farmworkers gain a greater audience. Read more.

Farm Bill Alliance Campaign
