CAGJ HAPPENINGS On May 13th, 14th and 15th thousands of people are converging upon the Shell and Tesoro refineries on March Point in Anacortes, WA, to stop the flow of oil into and out of the March Point refineries. The Shell and Tesoro refineries near Anacortes are the largest source of carbon pollution in the Northwest and refine 47% of all the gas and diesel consumed in the region. This system must change—within years, not decades. Join us as we take mass action to Break Free from Big Oil and hasten a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Hundreds of people will risk arrest by engaging in peaceful civil disobedience. Please consider joining this historic convergence and helping begin the global break from fossil fuels. The keynote, "Decolonizing the Food System: Lessons from Africa" will be given by world-renowned activist and food justice advocate Anuradha Mittal.

350 Seattle, WA Fair Trade Coalition and CAGJ are partnering to organize food activists to defeat the TPP because of the threats it represents to Food Labeling, Food Safety, Food Ethics, Farm to School Programs, our Climate and our Democracy. We need your help meeting our goal of 500 signers on our joint petition this month!
1. Please sign our petition today to tell our WA State Reps to vote NO on the TPP based on threats to building food sovereignty for all. 2. Union Grocery Workers Call for a Union Store on Broadway!
On April 14 CAGJ’s Director Heather Day spoke along with several others at a spirited rally at the Capitol Hill Transit Station, calling for the new grocery store on the site to be a locally-owned and union. Since that rally, Central Co-op announced their bid to open a new store at the site. Take Action on Central Co-op’s website to support their bid to be the new anchor tenant by sending a letter of support to the developer! In other news, UFCW 21 is happy to announce “the ratification of a new contract for 30,000 Puget Sound grocery workers represented by UFCW 21, UFCW 367 and Teamsters 38! This is the first time in 15 years that we have an approved agreement before contract expiration and it is due directly to the strength and activism of our members alongside community allies. Over the past 3 years our members have taken action to enforce our contracts and ensure fair and safe workplaces, and partnered with many community members, including CAGJ, to pass progressives policies such as paid sick leave and minimum wage increases. We will continue to build on our victories by winning statewide wage and sick leave improvements with Initiative 1433 in November, and are well on our way to ensuring we have the signatures to make it happen!”

Sophie Egan with Tim Egan: Are We What We Eat?
Downstairs at Town Hall $5. The popular saying “you are what you eat” could be more true than we know. According to Seattle-based author Sophie Egan, what people choose to eat defines who they are as a person. In conversation with author Tim Egan (her father), she’ll explore the science behind everything Americans eat. From the popularity of McDonald’s to the more recent gluten-free movement, her overview of these eating habits will touch on every aspect of truly American cuisine. Why does America have such a high rate of obesity? Why is “having it our way” so unique to the U.S.? Egan, who studied under Michael Pollan, will offer insight into these and other questions in her talk.

FRI May 13: songwriter and labor folksinger John O'Connor makes his first concert appearance in the Seattle area in almost two decades. He began his involvement in the labor movement right out of high school when he went to work in the factories of Waterloo, Iowa. An interest in folk music and Woody Guthrie led to a 40-year career as a folk singer and a cultural educator, performing in concerts, coffeehouses, schools and colleges, union education programs and political action events. SAT May 14: John will also be presenting his program, Hold the Fort at the Machinist Hall at 9135 15th Place S, Seattle 98108 at 7:00 PM on Saturday, May 14th. For more information and to RSVP. Hold the Fort; Stories and Songs of the Wobblies in Washington State is a narrative with songs that depicts the history of the IWW in Washington in the first two decades of the Twentieth Century. The Industrial Workers of the World, played a key role in the development of the labor movement in Washington State. The program includes such historic events as the free speech fight in Spokane, the Everett Massacre, the great lumber strike of 1917, the Seattle General Strike and the Centralia Massacre. It features songs by Joe Hill, Ralph Chaplin, T-Bone Slim and John O'Connor. Hold the Fort is especially timely in 2016, the 100th anniversary of the tragic events in Everett when at least five workers were killed as their ship, the Verona, docked to support the striking Shingleweavers.
