SUMMARY:March Monthly Organizing Meeting: Art & Activism with C2C and FUJ
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tues\, March 21 for our second Art & Activism webinar!  This month we will be joined by the artivism team at Community to Community (C2C)\, headed by Brenda Bentley\, and Edgar Franks\, of farmworker union Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ). The C2C art team and Edgar Franks have collaborated extensively to put on successful actions that honor the heritage and spirit of the immigrant and farmworker communities they represent. Through their organizing they have won union contracts for FUJ\, put on farmworker tribunals attended by local leaders\, and fought to pass crucial legislation like the farmworker overtime bill. \nThe Art & Activism series is part of our Monthly Organizing Meetings. This spring\, we are organizing to put on a couple of artmaking workshops in support of our movement partners. Help us organize them! \nPartner updates and events will be shared. \nNew members are welcome to join at 6:00 pm for a CAGJ orientation led by director Heather Day.

SUMMARY:Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting \nMarch 21\, 2023 via Zoom \n9am PST/12pm EST/4pm Senegal/6pm Zambia/7pm Kenya \nThe session will last 1.5 hours. \nYou are invited to the 2nd part of our series* to strengthen our solidarity with African Food Sovereignty Movements\, and to build transnational strategies to defend and promote native seeds. \nRegister now \nPresenters:\nFrances Davies\, Zambia Alliance for Agroecology and Biodiversity (ZAAB)\nFamara Diédhiou\, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa \nMembers of the Seed Working Group and staff of Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) will give a report on their plans for 2023\, including the goal of organizing a continental campaign for seed sovereignty. The US food sovereignty movement has a role to play in countering the aggressive push for seed privatization on the continent by USAID\, AGRA (formerly known as Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) and the Gates Foundation\, and defending native seeds and agroecology everywhere. Thus\, we aim to host a conversation with US activists aiming to work together transnationally with our African counterparts. \nThis meeting is co-hosted by Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch & US Food Sovereignty Alliance. \n*The first part was the Report-back on Feb. 1 about AFSA’s Africa Food Systems Conference in Cameroon\, by Malik Yakini and Heather Day. A recording will be made available soon. \nPhoto: Members of Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch and US Food Sovereignty Alliance with Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa\, at AFSA conference in Senegal in 2018

SUMMARY:Report-back from Cameroon & Africa Food Systems Conference
DESCRIPTION:Report-Back on WED FEB. 1st \n12-1 PM PST/3-4 PM EST \nRegister now \nHosted by US Food Sovereignty Alliance & Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch \nPresenters: \nMalik Yakini – Detroit Black Community Food Security Network \nHeather Day – Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch \nAt the end of November 2022\, Malik and Heather joined Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) as it hosted its 4th biennial Africa Food Systems Conference in Yaoundé\, Cameroon. AFSA represents over 200 million small-scale farmers\, fisherfolk\, pastoralists\, and indigenous peoples. The conference participants came from 30 African countries\, and shared experiences over three days\, including visits to the Cameroonian host organization’s farm\, market and training center. AFSA launched its Pan-African campaign during the conference\, “My Food is African/Je Mange Africain” which aims to inspire people in Africa to desire and demand traditional foods\, dishes\, diets and cuisines. \nMalik and Heather will share highlights and photos from the trip\, and share their reflections on how the US and African food sovereignty movements can continue to work in solidarity with each other. Malik brings his perspective as a lifelong Pan-Africanist\, and Heather as a campaigner against philanthrocapitalism through AGRA Watch\, a program of Community Alliance for Global Justice that counters the Gates Foundation’s funding of a so-called “green revolution” for Africa. \nPart 2: \nMarch Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting \nMarch\, 2023: Date TBD\, via Zoom \nThe forthcoming Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting will include members of AFSA’s Seed Working Group in conversation with US activists aiming to work together transnationally. We aim to hold the meeting in March. \nPresenters: \nFrances Davies\, Zambia Alliance for Agroecology and Biodiversity (ZAAB) \nFamara Diédhiou\, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa \nPlease register for Part 2 at this link.

SUMMARY:Virtual Food Sovereignty Prize Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:THURS OCT 13\, 9AM PDT/12PM EDT/4PM Ghana \n2022 Food Sovereignty Prize Ceremony honoring Food Sovereignty Ghana & Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) \nRegister Here for the virtual event emceed by Malik Yakini of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network \nNow in its 14th year\, the Food Sovereignty Prize is given annually near World Food Day to a domestic and international organization advancing food sovereignty – the right of all peoples to access healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods\, and their right to define their food\, fishery\, and farming systems. It stands in contrast to the corporate-funded World Food Prize\, which perpetuates the myth that society can produce its way out of hunger and the climate crisis with biotechnology and synthetic inputs. \nThe 2022 honorees have fought for years against corporate control of the food system\, defending sustainable farming and pasturing\, healthy soils\, and clean water\, building community power\, and advocating clean\, renewable energy sources. \nFood Sovereignty Ghana is a grassroots organization formed in 2013 to address the implications of genetically modified food technology on food sovereignty\, sustainable development\, biodiversity\, and the integrity of Ghanaian food and water resources\, human and animal health\, and their existence as a politically independent people. \nWestern Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) is a network of eight grassroots organizations in the US Western Plains formed in 1979. They organize rural communities and advocate for local\, state\, and national policies to support family farmers and ranchers and rural communities and address the growing concentration of economic and political power in a few corporations\, and the devastation this power has wrought on families\, communities and the environment. \nFree registration link: Join us to hear their stories and to celebrate their efforts to realize Food Sovereignty – Black Food Sovereignty\, Indigenous Food Sovereignty\, and Food Sovereignty everywhere! \nFor more info contact info@usfoodsovereigntyalliance.org

SUMMARY:Farm visit: Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a field trip to Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad\, the cooperatively-run farm founded by the leadership of farmworker union and CAGJ solidarity partner\, Familias Unidas por la Justicia. This field trip is part of Rise Up! Summer School\, and all are welcome! \nJoin us for a taste of exploitation-free berries and other goodies as we visit Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad (Earth and Freedom Cooperative farm)! This farm co-op is a perfect example of the realities we can create when we dream together. Founded by four farmworkers from Familias Unidas por la Justicia\, the first farmworker union with a legally recognized right to collective bargaining\, the co-op provides a space to build community\, learn how to practice agroecology\, and feed people good food. \nWhile Familias Unidas por la Justicia farmworker union came together to fight for better working conditions in the berry fields of Washington\, where exploitation of workers is often common-place\, the co-op is something different. It provides members and consumers with a model for an alternative economy based on self-determination\, that meets workers and community needs from its inception\, not just as a compromise to maintain a workforce. As cooperative co-founder Tomas Ramon says\, “This is for a better life.” \nCooperativa Tierra y Libertad Farm Visit details \n\nDepart 9AM\, arrive at farm around 11AM (travel times for those based in Seattle)\nWe will meet the farmworker leaders who founded the Cooperative when we arrive\nWe will lend a hand for a couple of hours; we will send details about these activities in advance\, will strive to make them accessible for all\, and will email a list of what to bring to participants.\nBring a bag lunch\nDepart 2PM to arrive back in Seattle at 4PM. Times may vary depending on traffic.\n\nCarpool!: If you are fully vaccinated and can offer a ride\, or if you need a ride\, please provide your info in this GSHEET – Thanks!

SUMMARY:We are the Salmon People: The Campaign to Block Corporate Salmon
DESCRIPTION:TUES July 12\, 6-8PM Pacific Time \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link! \nSpeakers: \n\nCarl Wassile is a Native Fisherman from Yup’ik Nation in Western Alaska and part of Alaska’s Big Village Network and #BlockCorporateSalmon\nEstefanía Narvaez is co-founder of #BlockCorporateSalmon and Digital Organizer at North America Marine Alliance (NAMA)\n\nJoin us for the 2nd workshop in CAGJ’s Rise Up Summer School series (open to all)\, organized around the theme of Indigenous Food Sovereignty! This interactive webinar will feature a discussion of the latest development in our #BlockCorporateSalmon campaign\, and a guided Visionary Fiction workshop\, where we will put our imaginations to the test in dreaming up a better future together.  \nThe workshop will be led by Carl Wassile and Estefanía Narvaez\, two organizers on the forefront of the #BlockCorporateSalmon campaign\, our years-long struggle to stop salmon genetically engineered by AquaBounty Technology from coming to our plates nor our rivers and seas. CAGJ has co-developed the #BlockCorporateSalmon campaign in solidarity with Northwest Tribes\, including the Coast Salish People\, who are the Salmon People.  \nFor many Tribes\, salmon is at the center of how they organize community life. Indigenous communities’ opposition to GE salmon is part of their struggle to safeguard access to and knowledge of the traditional foodways that sustain them. They challenge the commonly held notion that higher yields and profits\, spearheaded by technological innovation\, will pave the way to solving our ‘hunger problem’. Instead\, they advocate for alternative ways of acquiring food and caring for the environment that are based on reciprocity\, and which seek to undo the harm caused by colonization.  \nGE salmon is the first genetically engineered animal to ever gain approval for human consumption. While the FDA gave the green light in 2015\, the approval was halted by a successful lawsuit brought by the WA-based Quinault Indian Nation and 11 other parties\, requiring the FDA to carry out an in-depth investigation into the potential environmental harms for wild salmon populations.  \nThe AquaBounty company is currently facing challenges in the communities where they wish to open new land-based fish factories. Protesters in Pioneer\, Ohio oppose the new AquaBounty facility\, citing that they will be pulling 5 million gallons of water per day from the aquifer to sustain the fish farms\, and then dumping it into the St. Joseph river.  \nIn this webinar\, participants will learn about the many actions being taken to stop GE Salmon (and all other genetically engineered fish)\, and how YOU can get involved.  \nDon’t forget to register to receive the Zoom link! \nFollow the campaign on Instagram: #BlockCorporateSalmon \nAlong with accounts that follow the struggle: @CAGJ & @BlockCorporateSalmon ! \nLearn more about the campaign here!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Philanthrocapitalism and the Erosion of Democracy\, edited by Vandana Shiva
DESCRIPTION:Join YES! and Synergetic Press for the launch of a new book edited by Vandana Shiva: Philanthrocapitalism and the Erosion of Democracy. AGRA Watch contributed our research which exposes how the Gates Foundation uses the cover of an institution of higher education – Cornell University – to spread its propaganda favoring industrial agriculture\, GMOs and the global food marketplace. \nGlobal capitalists wield philanthropy to monopolize and privatize land use\, food production\, and the public health sector. Join a conversation with Vandana Shiva and CAGJ’s Director\, Heather Day\, to learn about this dangerous trend—and how global citizens are fighting back. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Breanna Draxler\, senior editor at YES! Media. \nThis event is FREE and will take place via Zoom. Get your FREE ticket here. \nPlease help publicize: Share the Facebook event. \nVandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental thinker\, activist\, feminist\, philosopher of science\, writer\, and science policy advocate\, and the editor of Philanthrocapitalism and the Erosion of Democracy. She is the founder of Navdanya Research Foundation for Science\, Technology and Ecology in India and president of Navdanya International. \nHeather Day is co-founder and executive director of Community Alliance for Global Justice\, a Seattle-based\, grassroots nonprofit whose AGRA Watch campaign contributed an article to the book. Previously\, Day was an organizer with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES). SUMMARY:2021 Food Sovereignty Prize Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The US Food Sovereignty Alliance (USFSA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Food Sovereignty Prize: The international honoree is the peasant movement FENSUAGRO of Colombia\, and the domestic honoree is Eastern Woodlands Rematriation of New England. \nNow in its 13th year\, the Food Sovereignty Prize is given annually on or around World Food Day to grassroots organizations advancing food sovereignty – the right of all peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods\, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. It stands in contrast to the World Food Prize\, which perpetuates the myth that we can produce our way out of hunger.  \nThis year’s honorees have been growing food\, defending territory\, sharing knowledge and building power in the face of state violence\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, and mounting climate chaos. \nBoth honorees will be recognized at the 2021 Food Sovereignty Prize Ceremony held on World Food Day\, October 16\, 2021 at 6 PM Eastern time/5 PM Colombian time. The ceremony will be held virtually and anchored by an in-person event sponsored by USFSA members Sustainable Agriculture of Louisville and Food in Neighborhoods Community Coalition. Simultaneous English/Spanish interpretation will be provided. \nRegistration is required to attend this free event. Register for the virtual event here.  \nFor more information\, contact info[at]usfoodsovereigntyalliance.org. \nThe US Food Sovereignty Alliance (USFSA) is a US-based alliance of food justice\, anti-hunger\, labor\, environmental\, faith-based and food producer groups that upholds the right to food as a basic human right and works to connect our local and national struggles to the international movement for food sovereignty. The Alliance works to end poverty\, rebuild local food economies and assert democratic control over the food system\, believing that all people have the right to healthy\, culturally appropriate food produced in an ecologically sound manner. Now\, to save her home from extreme weather\, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House\, she meets climate sceptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US\, from the rural-urban divide\, to schisms of race\, class and gender\, to the thinking that allows Americans to believe they live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to help Americans recognize\, and free themselves from\, a logic that is already destroying the Earth.” \nRaj Patel co-directed and co-produced the film with Steve James\, amongst others; James is renowned for his 1992 documentary Hoop Dreams.
