SUMMARY:Rich Appetites Film Screening at Town Hall Seattle: How Big Philanthropy is Shaping the Future of Food in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Friday March 25\, 7-9PM at Town Hall Seattle\nAGRA Watch Film Screening: Rich Appetites: How Big Philanthropy is Shaping the Future of Food in Africa \nGuest Speaker: Daniel Maingi\, Growth Partners Africa & Kenya Food Rights Alliance \nLocation: In-person at Town Hall Seattle\, 1119 8th Ave Seattle 98101. Virtual option forthcoming. Event is free. Suggested donation: $5 \nAGRA Watch is thrilled to present our short film series\, Rich Appetites\, which explores how billionaire philanthropists are pushing US-style industrial agriculture around the globe—including in Africa. This model of agriculture is the single largest cause of biodiversity loss worldwide\, fails to solve hunger\, and hurts small-scale farmers and the planet. The five films—The Foundation\, Seeds\, Money\, Science\, and Agroecology in Action—cover different aspects of the struggle over the future of African and global agriculture\, and highlight grassroots movements in support of agroecology and food sovereignty. Watch the trailer. \nFollowing the screening of the films\, we will be joined for a Q&A with Daniel Maingi and Kirubel Teshone\, of Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa\, and Ashley Fent\, of CAGJ’s AGRA Watch Campaign. Their discussion will speak to the current debates over sustainable agriculture and agribusiness in Africa\, in which The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation play a central role. \nAshley Fent is the producer of Rich Appetites. She has 10+ years’ experience as a social-environmental researcher\, writer\, and multimedia content producer. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UCLA. \nKirubel Tadele is the communications officer for the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA)\, a partner in the production of Rich Appetites. He has over ten years of experience in environmental advocacy and communication in both Ethiopian and international NGOs \nDaniel Maingi is a science and development practitioner in Kenya with a 15-year career helping bring learning on appropriate and sustainable technologies to Civil Society Organizations in Eastern Africa. Daniel is an outspoken leader in the struggle for biodiversity and against corporate-controlled GMOs in Kenya. \nRich Appetites is co-produced by AGRA Watch\, a campaign of the Community Alliance for Global Justice\, and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa. The films feature animation by Greenhouse Cartoons\, a South African production company. \n$5 suggested donation at the door (no one turned away for lack of funds). Livestream option TBD; will send more info ASAP. \nCOVID-19 Precautions: Masks are required to attend the event in person. N95 masks are strongly encouraged and there will be some available for free at the door.
