SUMMARY:October Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Food for Thought: A Book Club for Anti-corporate Food Systems \nJoin Community Alliance for Global Justice for monthly book discussions! \n \nRegister today! \nIn May we launched a new book club for CAGJ supporters and members of the public! We will focus on themes related to our work and campaigns\, including corporate control\, destructive philanthropy\, and people’s movements in resistance. CAGJ members will facilitate the discussions.  \nWHAT: The fourth Book Club meeting will discuss A Foodie’s Guide to Capitalism\, by Eric Holt-Gimenez. Order from Monthly Review. \nAbout the book: A Foodie’s Guide to Capitalism introduces the reader to the history of our food system and to the basics of capitalism. In straightforward prose\, Holt-Giménez explains the political economics of why—even as local\, organic\, and gourmet food have spread around the world—billions go hungry in the midst of abundance; why obesity is a global epidemic; and why land-grabbing\, global warming\, and environmental pollution are increasing. \nAbout the author: Eric Holt-Giménez is the former director of Food First\, the Institute for Food and Development Policy\, which was a “people’s think tank” dedicated to ending the injustices that cause hunger. For over two decades\, he worked with peasant movements in Mexico and Central America\, and taught and published widely. He is the author of Campesino a Campesino: Voices from Latin America’s Farmer to Farmer Movement for Sustainable Agriculture. \nEveryone is welcome to participate even if you have not read the whole book. \nWHERE: All gatherings will be offered in a hybrid format – both via Zoom and in person in Seattle. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link and Seattle meeting location: Register today! \nWHEN: 2nd Monday of every month\, 6:30 – 7:45PM PST \nAs we are meeting around dinnertime\, feel free to bring something to eat for yourself or to share with others (if attending in person). CAGJ will provide some light snacks. If attending by Zoom\, please feel free to eat your dinner either off or on-screen\, whatever you’re more comfortable with! \nPrevious Reads:\n \n\nMON May 13: The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire\, by Tim Schwab. Order from Powell’s\nMON June 10: Seeding Empire: American Philanthrocapital and the Roots of the Green Revolution in Africa\, by Aaron Eddens. Order from UC Press\nMON July 8: Translating Food Sovereignty: Cultivating Justice in an Age of Transnational Governance\, by CAGJ’s own Matt Canfield! Order from Powell’s \nMON Sep 9: Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers & the Future of Food in America\, by Liz Carlisle\, Avery Publishing 2016. SUMMARY:Report-back from Cameroon & Africa Food Systems Conference
DESCRIPTION:Report-Back on WED FEB. 1st \n12-1 PM PST/3-4 PM EST \nRegister now \nHosted by US Food Sovereignty Alliance & Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch \nPresenters: \nMalik Yakini – Detroit Black Community Food Security Network \nHeather Day – Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch \nAt the end of November 2022\, Malik and Heather joined Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) as it hosted its 4th biennial Africa Food Systems Conference in Yaoundé\, Cameroon. AFSA represents over 200 million small-scale farmers\, fisherfolk\, pastoralists\, and indigenous peoples. The conference participants came from 30 African countries\, and shared experiences over three days\, including visits to the Cameroonian host organization’s farm\, market and training center. AFSA launched its Pan-African campaign during the conference\, “My Food is African/Je Mange Africain” which aims to inspire people in Africa to desire and demand traditional foods\, dishes\, diets and cuisines. \nMalik and Heather will share highlights and photos from the trip\, and share their reflections on how the US and African food sovereignty movements can continue to work in solidarity with each other. Malik brings his perspective as a lifelong Pan-Africanist\, and Heather as a campaigner against philanthrocapitalism through AGRA Watch\, a program of Community Alliance for Global Justice that counters the Gates Foundation’s funding of a so-called “green revolution” for Africa. \nPart 2: \nMarch Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting \nMarch\, 2023: Date TBD\, via Zoom \nThe forthcoming Africa-US Seed Sovereignty Strategy Meeting will include members of AFSA’s Seed Working Group in conversation with US activists aiming to work together transnationally. We aim to hold the meeting in March. \nPresenters: \nFrances Davies\, Zambia Alliance for Agroecology and Biodiversity (ZAAB) \nFamara Diédhiou\, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa \nPlease register for Part 2 at this link.
