NEWS & ANALYSIS

CAGJ in the News! Report from CAGJ's June 25 Action to Demand Costco not to Sell GMO Salmon
On Thursday, June 25th, CAGJ delivered over 300,000 signatures to Costco’s headquarters in Issaquah, WA to urge the company to commit to not selling genetically modified (GM) salmon. In March, we attempted to deliver 50,000 signatures to Costco in Seattle, but they would not accept our petitions. This time we came back with 250,000 more signatures and went straight to the headquarters. (See pictures from the action here!) Participants were interviewed during the action by local news stations, and the story has been making waves over the past week! Local TV station KIRO 7 aired a great piece on the evening news giving background on the GMO salmon issue and highlighting the CAGJ action. Other media outlets also picked up the story including KING5, Nation of Change, EcoWatch, Oximity, and Under Current News.  Read more about CAGJ’s campaign to get Costco to reject GMO salmon and sign the petition
here.  Contact CAGJ’s Food Justice Project to get involved as a volunteer!
Fast Track Has Passed, But we are not finished
From the Washington State Fair Trade Coalition: Last week Fast Track passed in the Senate by just one vote. Unfortunately, both of WA's Senators voted wrong. You may be asking what happens now? Now, we turn our attention to the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) itself. The public's voice has been restricted to 60 days by fast track, with no route to meaningful input or influence on the agreement itself, but we are going to make sure that those 60 days are a deafening roar of opposition. We are planning wide-scale educational efforts to spark public debate and ensure that the largest trade agreement in our nation's history is not the TPP, a trade agreement negotiated in secret and designed to put investor interests over the public good. Not on our watch. Immediately, you can help by calling your members of Congress and either thanking them or voicing your unhappiness at the way they voted on Fast Track. Thanks for all that you did to try to stop fast-track! We can stills top the TPP! For more info, visit WFTC's website.

Report on "Honduran Social Movements Mobilizing for Justice"
Last week CAGJ hosted Karen Spring, a Canadian human rights activist and the Honduras-based Coordinator for the Honduras Solidarity Network (HSN).  Karen began working in Central America in 2008 and moved to Honduras permanently a few weeks after the June 2009 military coup.  While it was disturbing to learn of the proposed Charter Cities (read about a protest against them here) and repression of campesinos linked to production of Palm Oil, it was encouraging to learn more about the rise in social movement organizing since the coup that has led to several victories, despite the US government’s continued support of the right wing dictatorship in Honduras. You can take action by signing HSN’s petition here, to call for an end to continued militarization sponsored by the US government, and by contacting CAGJ if you are interested in helping organize a screening of a new film, Resistencia: The Fight for the Aguan Valley, about the landless workers movement in Honduras.

THURS July 9th
Join National Call-in DAY OF ACTION: Tell Costco "No GMO Salmon!"
Despite our demands, Costco isn’t listening. GMO salmon is a risk to our environment, especially wild salmon, and to our health. But Costco wants to leave the door open, and still hasn’t made a firm commitment to not sell GMO salmon if it’s approved by the FDA. Costco is a major retailer of salmon and seafood, and also prides itself on being a leader in organic food. We want Costco to be consistent, listen to top scientists and fishermen, and help keep GMO salmon off our plates and out of the environment. On July 9th, join people from all over the country to call Costco and tell them directly that it needs to do the right thing and say no to GMO salmon and stand up as a leader. Click here for the phone number and a script.

Seattle Tilth Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour

This is your chance to visit folks who are keeping chickens and creating "urban farms" in the Seattle area – including CAGJ’s Director Heather Day who runs 41 Legs Urban Farm with her husband (and SLEE chef) Travis English! Glean great ideas from creative neighbors who are incorporating animals and unique gardens into their home landscapes. Visit the
event page for the full scoop. In this self-guided tour, you will see simple chicken coops built in one afternoon and elaborate finely-crafted coops that took weeks of planning and building. See what accommodations are needed for keeping miniature goats, ducks, mason bees, honey bees and bunnies. Take a look at how people live together with these animals in an urban environment. Enjoy a unique and inspiring urban adventure! Seattle Tilth has been hosting this event, or a version of it, since the 90s. This year, a panel of local experts has selected Seattle's best 25 urban farms -- prizes will be awarded and tourists will be able to choose the winner of the  "People's Choice" award.
