Awarded by the US Food Sovereignty Alliance, the US Food Sovereignty Prize Award Ceremony took place on October 15, 2016 in Seattle, Washington. This year’s honorees were the Farmworker Association of Florida and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa. Read more about the week of events and background on the Prize.
The program of the ceremony, co-emceed by Heather Day of Community Alliance for Global Justice and Naim Edwards of Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, openswith powerful storytelling from Roger Fernandes, a member of the Lower Elwha Band of the S’Klallam Indians, sharing about the connection of food to our ancestors, our people, and those yet to come. Following Roger Fernandes, John Peck, representing La Via Campesina and Family Farm Defenders, delivers a moving keynote on the state of our food systems. Then the 2016 recipients accept their awards, Elvira Carvajal on behalf of Farmworker Association of Florida, and Bern Guri on behalf of Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa. Both give inspiring speeches on the significance of the Prize in their work and the larger movement for food sovereignty. Watch and enjoy!
